Introduction:

Elmastogoeg First Nations is located approximately 25 km northwest of the city of Corner Brook. The band was formerly a member of the Bay of Islands Regional Indian Band Council and has been affiliated with the FNI since the early 1970’s. Formerly known as Benoit's Cove Indian Band, the Band decided to change its name in 2003 to Elmastogoeg First Nations. The Name refers to the Bay of Islands and in Mi’kmaq translates as “the coming to and going from place.”

Band Activities:

The youth of Benoit's Cove have been learning about their culture in a variety of ways. Many of them attended a Dream catcher workshop that was hosted by the Youth Program of the Federation of Newfoundland Indians in March and April of 2004. This workshop was meant to bring together both youth and Elders in the community to share knowledge of Mi’kmaq craft making, history, and knowledge. All participants were taught to make dream catchers, and each community learned something different about their culture.

Annual Scholarship:

Value: Two awards of   $250

Eligibility: A member of the ELMASTOGOEG FIRST NATIONS BAND entering the second year of a degree program. The student must have proof of holding a minimum grade point average of 75%, with no failures; carry a full course load according to the requirements of the program; and demonstrate financial need.

Narrative:  Applicant must submit a brief narrative describing, “what you think being Mi’kmaq means to people in the 21^st century”.
